Emirates Stakes preview and betting guide

Bull Point

Emirates Stakes day, also known as Family Day, brings down the curtain on the Spring Racing Carnival.

So how's your Spring Carnival punting been?

We've had a pretty decent carnival so far, with the highlights picking out Hallowed Crown early in the Spring for a couple of wins including the Golden Rose, Junoob in the Metropolitan and First Seal in the Flight Stakes, and the Caulfield Cup trifecta and First 4.

Picking seven winners and six placegetters from 17 here was pretty helpful.

And of course, the Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist.

There were a couple of bad days too, but the good days won out thankfully.

So let's see if we can find a couple more winners to end the carnival in style.

We'll be back with more betting guides during the autumn.

Until then, may the horse be with you.

1.20pm Randwick Race 2
2015 Membership Handicap (BM70) 1400m

BET: 8 Santuario
Huge run first-up in stronger race when led, fought on and not beaten far behind Melbourne Cup week's good-thing-beaten Wine Tales. No weight with Winona Costin's claim and should be able to zip along in front again, and may be hard to run down if he gets tempo to suit.

NEXT BEST: 7 Hauraki - had no idea what he was doing but showed wonderful turn of foot in coming from near last to bolt in Kembla maiden last time. He might be very, very good.

3.00pm Flemington Race 5
Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 3) 2500m

BET: 2 Big Memory
Just missed out on a Melbourne Cup start, and stable was spewing when two were scratched ahead of race, thinking they were a live top 10 chance. If they're right, he'll be damn hard to beat here. Beat Cup winner Protectionist at Group 2 in Herbert Power. And he's beaten Signoff in two of their three meetings this Spring, and we saw how well he went in the Cup. Hasn't run a bad race this prep, and this looks his race.

NEXT BEST: 8 Noble Protector - really nice debut run in Australia behind Contributer, and expect to improve on that here.

3.40pm Flemington Race 6
Darley Classic (Group 1) 1200m

BET: 2 Lankan Rupee
Let me paint you a picture. Last start he beat the best field of sprinters assembled in Australia this year. He's won 8 of his last 11 starts. He's been placed in the other 3. He's won four Group 1 races. Yet you can have around $5.50. Not saying Chautauqua, who is half that quote, can't win. That horse might be a superstar. Just saying he's yet to prove it at this level. Lankan Rupee has. Many times. So on that basis, the reigning champ will do me.

NEXT BEST: 10 Chautauqua - clearly the other hope in the race. But despite the fact he's run great times and looked amazing in weaker races down the straight, the value's with Lankan Rupee.

4.20pm Flemington Race 7
Emirates Stakes (Group 1) 1600m

BET: 11 Bull Point
This bloke has been bursting to win a race, and his third to Trust In A Gust and Dissident three back at Group 1 was awesome. No hotter formline than that this Spring. Desperately unlucky last start when beaten by Hooked at unsuitable Moonee Valley. His big finish and the pace on should suit Flemington. He's only won to Group 3 but is multiple Group 1 placed. And of course, Chris Waller and Damien Oliver have combined successfully already at Group 1 level this week. So he's in good hands.

NEXT BEST: 5 Hooked - superb win last start and a great trier. Think the race in which he beat Bull Point is the key race here, and he should run well again.

5.40pm Flemington Race 9
Emirates Airline Handicap (Open) 1400m

BET: 7 Eclair Big Bang
Unlucky last start when raced inside horses, couldn't get clear, and should have beaten In Cahoots who has since made that form look pretty good by chasing home potential star Deep Field. He's only ever started once at 1400m. He won, beating Long John - last year's Caulfield Guineas winner now performing well overseas. His best runs have come when he's on-speed, and the wide barrier should allow him to settle near front but importantly with clear galloping room.

NEXT BEST: 4 Fast'n'Rocking - just behind Eclair Big Bang in the In Cahoots race and has won since. Been in great form since being gelded.
