Who is the next St Kilda coach?

Sporting News Logo

Mark Williams - A premiership coach who could be considered to lead a cultural change at the club. His efforts to take Port Adelaide to the premiership are probably under appreciated. More importantly, he has the force of personality to get the job done. Left GWS because he wasn't going to be given a senior coaching shot and a chance at St Kilda could appeal. Currently in a Director of Coaching role at Richmond, but he's been linked with several jobs over the past few months and is the clear favourite to take the position.

Robert Harvey - Club legend who has spent time as an assistant at Carlton and Collingwood and could prove a massive positive force both on and off the field. Not known as a salesman, but so highly respective by the Saints faithful that his appointment could prove a galvanising force for an embattled club.

Brett Ratten - Ratten, currently an assistant at Hawthorn, suffered the weight of expectation at Carlton, as well as the pressure of a successor. He took the Blues to three finals series in six years in charge, but just one final win.

Mark Harvey - Another coach shuffled out the door in a hurry, with his reign at Fremantle coming to a rapid and unceremonious end when Ross Lyon landed in WA. Harvey has been assistant at Brisbane for the past couple of seasons and took the helm when Michael Voss was shown the door.

Michael Voss -Voss' departure from Brisbane is still one of the more mystifying in recent AFL history as he still seemed ready to give so much more to the coaching caper. Is not currently connected to any club and could bring some composure to the club.

Adam Kingsley -  Highly rated assistant at the Saints who has a long association with Saints football boss Chris Pelchen. Is the man most likely to be promoted from within to take the job.

Scott Burns - A highly rated assistant coach now at Collingwood who has missed out narrowly on a few coaching roles. He probably has the best credentials of any in that category.

Leigh Tudor - A well-travelled assistant who has had considerable experience at St Kilda, including when they made the Grand Final in 2010, went to Sydney, where he was part of the 2012 premiership success, and only recently signed for North Melbourne. Also coached Geelong to a VFL flag in 2007.

Matthew Knights - Left Essendon in less than ideal circumstances, but has rebuilt his coaching reputation at VFL level with Geelong, where he led them to premiership success in 2012. Perhaps ready for another shot at the top level.

Gary Ayres - Has been out of AFL picture since leaving Adelaide in 2004, but has since built an imposing record at Port Melbourne, getting the standalone VFL club to three Grand Final appearances including 2011 when they won every game including the premiership. It would be a 'back to the future' option, but not completely out of the question.

Terry Wallace - The self-proclaimed 'list manager' has not coached since 2009 but does have a track record of improving a struggling club having guided the Bulldogs to four consecutive finals series in the late 1990s. Very much a left-field candidate.
