Victoria Police Commissioner Ken Lay admitted Saturday's patrons “will feel a new sense of anxiety” after a Muslim extremist terror suspect was killed at a Melbourne police station overnight.

The MCG is expected to be at capacity despite the government’s decision to lift Australia’s terrorism alert level.

And Mr Lay told a press conference on Wednesday there would be an unprecedented security clamp-down for the match between Hawthorn and Sydney.

He advised fans to arrive earlier than they would normally and expect longer lines.

"(Ticket holders) should be assured by the sight of many extra police at the game who will be working closely with the ground security," he said.

"We will have specialist resources deployed on the day, including undercover operatives.

"We want people to enjoy this weekend, as Victorians have always celebrated their grand final footy.”
