Wozniacki thrashes Vinci in Istanbul

The final pitted the top two seeds against one another, but it proved to be an uneven contest as Wozniacki triumphed 6-1 6-1 at the WTA International hard-court event in Turkey.

World number 24 Vinci had been fancied to topple the Dane, having not lost a set in her run to the final, while Wozniacki had been taken the distance in the second round and quarter-finals by Karin Knapp and Karolina Pliskova respectively.

But Wozniacki, ranked 15 in the world, showed no signs of weariness as she was on court for just 67 minutes.

On the same day that her former fiance Rory McIlroy made sporting headlines by winning golf's Open Championship, the 24-year-old showed her own dominance right from the start. She won 80 per cent of first-serve points and broke on two occasions in the first set.

A similar pattern followed in the second, as Wozniacki broke a further three times, while she also showed her defensive qualities by fending off three break-point chances for Vinci when serving at 4-1.

Wozniacki now has an impressive haul of 22 WTA titles, although victory in Istanbul was her first of the season.

Vinci, meanwhile, has suffered defeats in consecutive tournaments since Wimbledon after she also finished runner-up to Simona Halep in Bucharest last week.
