The Dane reached the decider at the final grand slam of the year before being thrashed by world number one, and good friend, Serena Williams.

Wozniacki has enjoyed good form since Wimbledon, winning a title in Istanbul and pushing Williams in two three-set losses.

Camila Giorgi is the only player other than Williams to beat Wozniacki since her fourth-round exit at the All England Club.

Wozniacki is the second seed at the WTA Premier event played on hard courts in Tokyo, starting Monday.

German left-hander Angelique Kerber takes the top seeding, but her form has been average.

Kerber reached the final at Stanford before three consecutive third-round exits.

Serbian duo Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic are also among the seeds in a relatively strong field.

Both players have performed well at the tournament in the past.

Ivanovic was runner-up in 2007, while Jankovic was beaten in the final two years later.

Sara Errani, Dominika Cibulkova, Lucie Safarova and Carla Suarez Navarro make up the other seeds.

Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic is also competing.

The supremely talented 17-year-old made the US Open quarter-finals and could be a threat.
