Wozniacki ends Kvitova hopes

Wozniacki was already assured of her place in the last four at the season-ending tournament in Singapore when Maria Sharapova dropped a set against Agnieszka Radwanska earlier on Friday. And the world number eight advanced with a 100 per cent record following this comfortable 6-2 6-3 victory.

Sharapova's 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 win over Radwanska had opened the door for Kvitova to join Wozniacki in the knockout stages, but she was unable to capitalise.

It was a far cry from the day's early game, which saw Sharapova come through in over three hours, as Wozniacki wrapped up the win in 70 minutes.

Kvitova took a 2-1 lead in the opening set with a break of serve, but that was as good as it got for the world number three as Wozniacki roared back in style.

The Dane reeled off five successive games - including three breaks of serve - to move ahead in the match and leave Kvitova with it all to do.

Once more it was Kvitova who made the stronger start to the second set, as an early break gave her the initiative, but again she let her advantage slip.

Wozniacki broke back in game four to level at 2-2 and the writing was on the wall for Kvitova when the Dane took a 5-3 lead.

Serving for victory, Wozniacki wasted one match point, but she was not to be denied a second time as Kvitova sent a forehand long to end her participation in the tournament.

Wozniacki progressed as undefeated White Group winner.
