For the second time in a fortnight, Serena Williams proved too strong for Monica Niculescu as the American opened her Miami Open campaign in devastating fashion on Saturday.

Williams - bidding to win an eighth Miami title - won the rescheduled match 6-3 6-1 after rain forced the second-round clash to be pushed back a day at the WTA Premier event.

The 19-time grand slam winner showed no signs of the knee injury that forced her to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals, getting the better of Niculescu yet again after edging the Romanian 7-5 7-5 at Indian Wells.

"It was a little sore in practice, but it was okay today," said Williams, who will meet 15-year-old Catherine Bellis next. "I really didn't feel it to be honest. On the court you have so much adrenaline going, and the adrenaline kind of kills it.

"So I was surprised. I felt pretty good."

German 13th seed Angelique Kerber and 11th-seeded Italian Sara Errani also advanced to the third round via rain-affected matches.

Kerber saw off Briton Heather Watson 7-5 3-6 6-4 in two-and-a-half hours after play was washed out on Friday with the former holding a one-set lead.

Svetlana Kuznetsova awaits Kerber in the third round.

Errani, who led 6-1 4-1 when her clash with Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was postponed, triumphed 6-1 7-6 (7-5).

Next up for Errani is Garbine Muguruza.

Canadian sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard was bundled out in the second round, eliminated by German qualifier Tatjana Maria 6-0 7-6 (7-4).

Meanwhile, there were no surprises in the third round as seeds Caroline Wozniacki (fourth) and Agnieszka Radwanska (seventh) both progressed.

Dane Wozniacki overcame windy conditions to beat Kaia Kanepi 4-6 6-1 6-3 in just over two hours to set up a fourth-round showdown with 16th seed Venus Williams, who dispatched Samantha Stosur 6-4 7-6 (7-3).

Pole Radwanska will take on Spanish 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who defeated Alize Cornet 6-0 6-4, after overcoming Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2 4-6 6-2.

Seeds Ekaterina Makarova (eighth) and Andrea Petkovic (ninth) will go head-to-head in the fourth round.

Russian Makarova accounted for Elina Svitolina 6-0 6-4, while German Petkovic eased past Kristina Mladenovic.

Czech 14th seed Karolina Pliskova prevailed 7-5 6-1 against Paula Badosa Gibert to advance to the fourth round, where she will play Russian Daria Gavrilova, who trumped Kurumi Nara 6-0 7-6 (7-5).
