The world number 553 provided the shock of the day at the ATP 1000 hard-court event, prevailing 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 over the Italian.

Fognini, ranked 17th in the world and notorious for his hot-headed nature, took the defeat badly, making an obscene gesture as he left the court.

Wang, meanwhile, was understandably delighted with the win, which saw him save four of five break points on his way to setting up a second-round clash with Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri.

"I wanted to win this match, but I never actually thought I could do it," he said. "I practised with him in Beijing, so I knew a bit about him.

"And my coach used to be in the ATP circle, so he also told me something about Fabio's weaknesses. I think I executed the game plan quite well.

"This is my first win on the ATP World Tour, and it's at a Masters 1000 event. I am still experiencing the difference between ATP events and Futures events. All I can say is this: ATP is more competitive and intense. The opponents here won't give you any free points."

The only other seed to crash out in the first round on Tuesday was Ernests Gulbis, who went down 6-4 6-1 to Mikhail Youzhny.

Andy Murray, champion in 2010 and 2011, began his quest for a third crown with a 6-1 7-5 success over Teymuraz Gabashvili.

After dominating the first set, the two-time Grand Slam winner rescued the second, recovering from 5-3 down to reel off four consecutive games and set up a clash with Jerzy Janowicz, who battled back to overcome Edouard Roger-Vasselin 3-6 7-5 7-6 (8-6).

Martin Klizan will face fifth seed David Ferrer after the Slovakian saw off Samuel Groth 7-6 (7-1) 6-3, and Leonardo Mayer will meet Roger Federer after a 6-4 6-1 triumph over Wu Di.

Gilles Simon's 3-6 6-0 6-1 victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez means the Frenchman will take on Stanislas Wawrinka in the last 32, while second seed Rafael Nadal will go up against compatriot Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7 (14-12) 6-3 6-4.

Julien Benneteau saw off home hope Zhang Ze 5-7 6-3 6-3, while Steve Johnson beat Andrey Golubev 6-3 1-6 6-3.

Vasek Pospisil got the better of Santiago Giraldo 6-2 6-7 (7-5) 6-1 and Ivan Dodig ousted Pablo Cuevas 7-5 6-2.

Elsewhere, in the two second-round matches on Tuesday, Ivo Karlovic progressed beyond Lu Yen-hsun 7-6 (8-6) 6-3, while Mikhail Kukushkin dumped out 12th seed Kevin Anderson 6-4 6-2.
