Denmark-born Villumsen, who competes for New Zealand, missed out on a medal at the London Olympics by two seconds in this event back in 2012.

But she went some way to putting that right on her return to British shores, taking gold with a final time of 42 minutes 25.46 seconds.

That was enough to edge out England's Emma Pooley (+6.03secs), while Australian Katrin Garfoot completed the podium, over 48 seconds off the leading pace.

In the men's event, Englishman Dowsett - who won silver in Delhi four years ago - went one better this time round, clocking 47 minutes 41.8secs.

He saw off Australia's Rohan Dennis, who was nine seconds slower, with Geraint Thomas of Wales claiming bronze (+14.04secs).

"Nobody wanted that more than I did," Dowsett told BBC Sport. "After the disappointment of not being picked for the Tour de France and the silver in Delhi in 2010.

"I've been angry all this month, ever since I was a kid I have pulled something out of the bag when I have been really angry. It's pretty special that."

In gymnastics, England's Max Whitlock made it three gold medals for the Games by taking top spot in the men's floor.

Whitlock - already with all-around and team titles in the bag - topped the podium with a score of 15.533, just edging out Canadian Scott Morgan (15.133) and David Bishop of New Zealand (14.550).

With the pommel horse and rings finals to come, Whitlock could end the Games with five golds to his name.
