Trio set to continue Tour Finals race in Valencia

Just three spots remain for the season-ending Tour Finals at the O2 Arena next month, with Berdych, Murray and Ferrer all still in the hunt for vital ranking points.

Berdych sits in seventh position in the race for London, having beaten Grigor Dimitrov 5-7 6-4 6-4 to win the Stockholm Open title on Sunday, capturing his second trophy of a year that has seen him reach five ATP finals.

Meanwhile, Murray occupies the eighth and final spot after overcoming Ferrer 5-7 6-2 7-5 in the Vienna Open showpiece, a triumph that saw him move 110 points ahead of the Spaniard following his second success of 2014.

Ferrer, a three-time winner of the Valencia Open, is the top seed for this year's event, but starts with a relatively tough encounter versus world number 49 Andreas Seppi of Italy, as the Spaniard bids to atone for his defeat to Mikhail Youzhny in the 2013 final.

Youzhny emerged victorious 6-3 7-5 over Ferrer last year and begins the quest to defend his crown against qualifier Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.

Second seed Berdych – whose only other appearance at the tournament saw him lose in the second round in 2009 – faces home hope Pablo Andujar, while third seed Murray takes on Austria's Jurgen Melzer in his opening encounter.

But while all the focus will be on the top three seeds, there is sure to plenty of support for the heavy Spanish contingent at the event.

Fourth seed Feliciano Lopez should be expected to prevail in his opener with qualifier Norbert Gombos of Slovakia, however, Tommy Robredo faces a much tougher task versus big-serving American fifth seed John Isner.

Marcel Granollers, winner in 2011, meets compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta and 2012 runner-up Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine opens his campaign to go one better against eighth seed Gilles Simon.
