Top seed Muguruza eases past Kasatkina

GarbineMuguruza - Cropped

Top seed Garbine Muguruza made light work of Darya Kasatkina in the first round of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem on Tuesday.

Muguruza, who won the doubles title at this WTA International clay-court event alongside Romina Oprandi last year, overcame her opponent - ranked 230 places below her - 6-4 6-1.

World number 250 Kasatkina held her own in the opening set, before a Muguruza break in the ninth game set the Spaniard on her way.

From there, she never looked back, recording three more breaks in a one-sided second set to book her place in the next round against Kristina Mladenovic, who defeated Marina Erakovic 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Second seed Timea Bacsinszky also made it safely through, 6-3 7-5 against Evgeniya Rodina, while Flavia Pennetta was similarly comfortable in her clash with Bojana Jovanovski, prevailing 6-2 6-3.

Bacsinszky will now face Tatjana Maria, who beat Carina Witthoeft 6-3 6-2, and Pennetta will take on Laura Siegemund, a 6-2 6-3 victor over Pauline Parmentier.

Fifth seed Mona Barthel, however, crashed out 6-4 6-0 at the hands of world number 86 Timea Babos.

Qualifier Teliana Pereira will represent Babos' next opponent after her 6-3 6-2 success over Kaia Kanepi.

Monica Puig and Roberta Vinci also enjoyed safe passages - 6-0 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 6-3 against Alison Van Uytvanck and Urszula Radwanska respectively.

Maria Irigoyen inflicted a double bagel on world number 1,149 Rita Atik and Christina McHale eased past Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 6-2.

McHale will now meet fourth seed Elina Svitolina, who saw off Donna Vekic 6-2 6-2, while elsewhere Karin Knapp defeated Cagla Buyukakcay 6-3 7-6 (7-5).
