Suarez Navarro thrashed Andrea Petkovic 6-0 6-4 on Tuesday, while Italy's Pennetta put on a clinic to dispatch Alize Cornet 6-1 6-2.

Diminutive Spaniard Suarez Navarro hit the front by breaking immediately, and had to scrap to consolidate - saving two break points to go 2-0 up.

From there, she was dominant on serve, giving up just three points, and tenacious when facing to complete a whitewash in the opening set.

The second was a topsy-turvy affair with both players coughing up serving advantage.

However, Suarez Navarro secured three breaks to Petkovic's two, converting match point at the second attempt to go top of the Sredets Group after the first day of action.

In the sole match in the Serdika Group, Pennetta also made a fast start in Sofia, going 1-0 up from the fifth break point of the opening game before stretching into a 4-0 lead.

The Italian quickly moved one set ahead and France's Cornet could muster little in the way of a response in the second.

In Tuesday's early Sredets Group game, Dominika Cibulkova overcame Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 7-6 (8-6).
