Day one of the WTA International event in China saw seeds Roberta Vinci and Annika Beck crash out, and Stosur was the biggest of several unexpected casualties on Tuesday, with Sloane Stephens, Bojana Jovanovski, Zarina Diyas and Jana Cepelova also sent packing.

Results over the course of the first two days of action in Guangzhou mean that just one of the eight seeded players - second seed Alize Cornet - will compete in the last 16.

World number 20 Stosur looked on course for an easy route to round two when she took the opening set 6-2 against homegrown wildcard Wang.

However, the Australian took her foot off the gas at the beginning of set two, with an immediate break from Wang setting the tone for the remainder of the match.

Wang duly won the second set 6-2, before claiming two breaks to repeat that scoreline in the third to seal a clash with Croatian qualifier Petra Martic, who saw off Sorana Cirstea 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.

Tuesday's final match saw the third-seeded Stephens beaten 6-3 4-6 6-4 by Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa, while Jovanovski and Diyas - seeded fourth and fifth respectively - were dumped out in straight sets by Monica Niculescu and Zhang Ling.

Jovanovski dropped serve five times to Niculescu's once in a resounding 6-2 6-2 victory for the Romanian, while Diyas never got going against qualifier Zhang and was beaten 6-4 6-1.

Seventh seed Cepelova, meanwhile, lost 6-1 6-4 to Zhang Kai-Lin.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Xu Yi-Fan defeated Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2 6-3, Hsieh Su-Wei overcame Alison Van Uytvanck 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 6-4 and Monica Puig beat Karin Knapp 6-1 4-6 6-2.
