The 10th seed proved too good for Russia's Sharapova, winning 6-4 2-6 6-2 at Flushing Meadows.

French Open champion Sharapova made 21 errors in the first set but responded well in the second, hitting 22 winners.

That forced a decider as the fifth-seeded Sharapova had all the momentum.

But two more breaks from Wozniacki in the final set proved enough, as she set up a meeting with Italian Sara Errani in the quarter-finals.

"It means so much to me," Wozniacki said.

"It's been a bit up and down for me this year. To win today against a champion like Maria is an unbelievable feeling.

"I'm just so happy to be through now, Sara [Errani] is a tough opponent, she gets so many balls back - I need to stay aggressive."
