Williams waltzes past Bellis in Miami

Serena Williams - Cropped

Serena Williams swiftly ended the run of Catherine Bellis at the Miami Open, while fifth seed Ana Ivanovic was a surprise casualty on Sunday.

Top seed Williams waltzed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 victory over 15-year-old Bellis, taking just 41 minutes to dispatch of the wildcard entrant.

Williams lost just two points on serve - and won all 17 points when she landed her first ball.

Bellis, who stunned Dominika Cibulkova at the US Open in August, added to her maiden tour-level victory with wins over Indy de Vroome and Zarina Diyas at the WTA Premier event.

Third seed Simona Halep continued her stellar run, the BNP Paribas Open champion edging out 30th seed Camila Giorgi 6-4 7-5.

Ivanovic, however, was departing the hard-court tournament early - the fifth seed's campaign ended by Sabine Lisicki.

Lisicki, the 27th seed, beat the one-time French Open winner 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (seeded 24th) and Sara Errani (11th) both won three-set encounters.

Kuznetsova downed 13th seed Angelique Kerber 6-3 3-6 6-3, the two-time major winner advancing to a fourth-round date with world number one Williams.

Errani came from behind to defeat 21st seed Garbine Muguruza 4-6 6-4 6-1.

Flavia Pennetta edged Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6), the 15th seed avenging her most recent loss to the Belarusian - which came in the 2013 US Open semi-finals.

Rising stars Belinda Bencic and Sloane Stephens were both on the winners' list.

Bencic downed qualifier Tatjana Maria 6-4 7-5, while Stephens got past Johanna Larsson 6-4 6-4.
