Serena Williams became the eighth player to reach 700 WTA Tour match wins with Wednesday's 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3 victory over Sabine Lisicki at the Miami Open.

Williams joins Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Lindsay Davenport and Conchita Martinez in reaching the milestone.

Tournament organizers presented Williams a cake after the match to mark the accomplishment.

"I think my destiny was to play tennis," Williams told reporters, according to The Associated Press. "I saw a picture where I was in a stroller on the tennis court."

The world No. 1 and defending champion recovered from a second-set wobble to reach the Miami semifinals.

Lisicki hurried Williams into mistakes, but her groundstrokes were found wanting and eventually Williams took advantage.

Having saved a set point, Williams broke to take it to a tiebreak, which she won with ease.

Neither player could hold her serve in the second set, but Lisicki took total control and leveled the match.

Williams, though, went up 3-0 in the decider, and Lisicki was unable to force her way back into contention.

Williams will now face third-seeded Simona Halep, who defeated Sloane Stephens later Wednesday. The other semifinal will pit No. 9 Andrea Petkovic against No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro.

In men’s action, Andy Murray overcame a sluggish start to progress to the semifinals, beating Dominic Thiem 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The Briton, fresh from his 500th career win in Round 4, ultimately proved his battling qualities as he was forced to come from behind against the Austrian young gun.

In doing so, he set up a last-four showdown with Tomas Berdych and stayed on course to reclaim a title he won in 2009 and 2013.

Berdych and Murray will meet for the first time since their Australian Open semi-final, which the Brit won in four sets.

The Melbourne Park match was filled with tension, with Murray's fiancee Kim Sears directing a tirade towards Berdych's player box.

Berdych is coached by Dani Vallverdu, a former mentor of Murray's.
