Serena seeded eight at Wimbledon

Serena Williams has been seeded eighth for this year's Wimbledon despite her ranking slipping to 26 in the world after a year of inactivity.

Serena, a four-time winner at the All-England Club, only returned to action at Eastbourne on Tuesday after a foot injury she sustained shortly after claiming last year's Wimbledon title led to her being out for almost a full year.

In March it was revealed the 29-year-old had suffered a blood clot on her lung.

Meanwhile, Serena's older sister Venus, a five-time Wimbledon champion, has been seeded 24th despite her ranking dipping to 33.

Venus, who turns 31 on Friday, also made her return to tennis at Eastbourne, after she was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open after only seven points of her third-round clash with Germany's Andrea Petkovic.

"The seeding order follows the WTA ranking list, except where in the opinion of the committee, a change is necessary to produce a balanced draw," a Wimbledon spokesperson said.

"The only changes this year are Serena Williams and Venus Williams moving to eight and 24, respectively."

"This reflects the balance between their proven records and also their lack of competitive play in the past 12 months."

The rest of the women's seeds are as expected, with world number one Caroline Wozniacki seeded first, Kim Clijsters second, Vera Zvonareva at three and French Open champion Li Na fourth.

Victoria Azarenka is seeded fifth, with Russia's Maria Sharapova - the 2004 champion - sixth.

The rankings have dictated the men's seedings, with world number one Rafael Nadal the top seed, followed by Novak Djokovic at second, Roger Federer third and Scotland's Andy Murray fourth.

Robin Soderling is seeded fifth, with Tomas Berdych sixth, Spain's David Ferrer seventh and American Andy Roddick seeded eighth.
