Injured tennis star Serena Williams has suffered another health scare after she was hospitalised with a blood clot in her lungs on Monday.

The American world number 12 has been absent from the WTA Tour since cutting her foot in a restaurant in Germany following her Wimbledon title win in 2010, with the 29-year-old's comeback again put on hold with the recent ailment.

"(On) Monday, Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars (Sinai Medical Center) for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation," Williams' representative Nicole Chabot told people.com.

"Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) which was discovered upon her return to LA. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot."

"Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications."

Williams had only attended a private party the previous night, but found herself recovering in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles the next day to receive treatment.
