The unforced error came from Federer's Twitter account @rogerfederer with the Swiss maestro's tribute post about Hewitt labelling him a New Zealander.
Federer quickly corrected his error but not before the error was picked up by social media users.
Hewitt bowed out of Wimbledon for the final time with a five-set loss to Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-0 11-9.
The sporting world saluted Hewitt on social media for his magnificent career that included being the youngest ever world No.1 at 20 years of age, a Wimbledon title and a US Open trophy.
