Rafa refuses to play with Nick Kyrgios

Reports out of the US suggest that the current world number eight Rafael Nadal was reluctant to take the court with Kyrgios at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy charity event in the US earlier this week, in the wake of the Australian’s recent sledge of Stan Wawrinka.

The pair were set to take the court side-by-side in a double’s match until the fixture was rearranged.

Nadal was eventually paired with Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt while McEnroe himself took to the court beside Kyrgios.

When probed on the issue, Kyrgios responded in familiar fashion.

“Everyone’s move on from it,” Kyrgios said.

“I’m playing really good tennis. It’s part of the journey.

“I don’t think anyone was perfect when they were 20. It wasn’t the best thing but I learned from that and keep maturing every day.”

Nadal very publicly ripped into Kyrgios in Montreal one week ago, suggesting that his comments about Wawrinka’s girlfriend were unnecessary and a bad look for the game.

“It is completely unnecessary. It is out of what a tennis match should be,” Nadal said following the incident.

“Age is not an excuse. It’s just about respect. He was wrong.”

Kyrgios was hit with a suspended 28-day ban and $US25,000 fine by the ATP should the young Australian slip up again.
