Poland's world number five is bidding to bounce back from a disappointing display at the US Open, where the 25-year-old's campaign ended in straight sets against China's Peng Shuai in the second round.

And she certainly showed glimpses of rediscovering her form in a comfortable 6-3 6-3 triumph over Slovenia's Hercog in Seoul on Tuesday.

As one of only two players ranked inside the world's top 32 - the other being second seed Karolina Pliskova who climbed to 32nd on Monday - it is little surprise Radwanska progressed, but the 2012 Wimbledon finalist did not have things all her own way.

After opening up a 3-0 advantage over Hercog, Radwanska lost the seventh game on her own serve to allow her opponent back on terms.

However, the Pole offered an instant reply to leave herself to serve for the opening set.

The second got off to a disappointing start for Radwanska as she conceded the opening two games, but three breaks of Hercog's serve saw her into the second round, where she will meet South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers.

Pliskova's tournament also started with a straight-sets triumph - winning 6-1 6-2 against Julia Glushko of Israel to set up a clash with Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam.

The only real upset of the day came in the clash between eighth seed Heather Watson and American qualifier Nicole Gibbs, as the British number one suffered a 7-5 6-2 defeat.

After a late collapse lost her the first set, Watson failed to make her break points count in the second.

Third seed Klara Koukalova was quick out of the blocks in her 6-0 4-6 6-4 win over Kiki Bertens, while Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-4 3-6 6-2.

Sixth seed Kaia Kanepi, meanwhile, made short work of qualifier Elizaveta Kulichkova - winning 6-2 6-4 - and will now face Kristyna Pliskova - a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) winner over Stefanie Voegele.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Maria Kirilenko, Danka Kovinic and Yanina Wickmayer against Donna Vekic, Anna Schmiedlova and Mandy Minella respectively.
