Proposal interrupts Nadal match as clay-court king coasts through

Rafael Nadal made short work of Spanish compatriot Nicolas Almagro as he surged into the third round of the Barcelona Open with a 6-3 6-1 victory.

The world number four suffered a rare clay-court defeat against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters last week, but was rarely threatened on this occasion in an easy win in Catalonia.

Only a court-side marriage proposal - which was accepted - at the end of the first set disrupted Nadal's rhythm - as he dropped serve in the opening game of the second.

But the 14-time grand slam champion rattled off the next five games before surviving seven break points in the final game to set up a last-16 meeting with Fabio Fognini, who beat Andrey Rublev 3-6 6-4 6-1.

David Ferrer was another comfortable winner, the third seed cruising to a 6-3 6-2 win over Albert Montanes, while fifth seed Feliciano Lopez saved a match point in his 6-2 5-7 7-6 (7-5) success against Marsel Ilhan.

Yet Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ernests Gulbis did not have the same fortune, with that trio of seeds all suffering surprise defeats.

Fourth seed and US Open champion Marin Cilic threw away a 3-1 lead in the first set in his 6-4 6-4 defeat to Victor Estrella, and sixth seed Tsonga was well beaten 6-4 6-2 by Marcel Granollers.

"The conditions didn't suit me as much today," Cilic said. "It was pretty heavy and very tough to put the ball away. There were not too many winners. It went much more in Victor's favour.

"Overall, I was not too happy with the way I played today. I made a lot of unforced errors. I feel I still need several matches to get my form to a good stage."

Benoit Paire produced a sterling fightback to knock out eighth seed Gulbis with a 1-6 6-2 6-3 victory.

There were no such problems for 12th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in his 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 triumph over Andrey Kuznetsov, but 11th seed Leonardo Mayer exited the tournament at the hands of Pablo Andujar 2-6 6-1 6-2.

Sweden's Elias Ymer came through after two hours and 26 minutes in a battle of two 19-year-olds to beat Nick Kyrgios 2-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7).

Elsewhere in the draw, Martin Klizan bested Juan Monaco and Santiago Giraldo overcame Joao Sousa.
