No worries for Nara in Kuala Lumpur

KurumiNara-Cropped

Kurumi Nara progressed to the second round of the Malaysian Open on Monday with a straightforward straight sets win over Stefanie Vogele.

With no seeds in action in Kuala Lumpur, world number 57 Nara went into the day as the highest-ranked player in action, and duly delivered the goods with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) success.

But, while Nara enjoyed serene progression, Zheng Saisai, Bojana Jovanovski and Wang Qiang all lost to players outside the top 100.

Jovanovski was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Elizaveta Kulichkova and Wang and Zheng suffered defeats to Magda Linette and Kateryna Kozlova respectively.

Duan Ying-Ying won the all-Chinese encounter with Xu Yi-Fan in three sets. Elsewhere in the draw Luksika Kumkhum overcame Japanese qualifier Junri Namigata and home hope Jawariah Noordin was knocked out by Yulia Putintseva.
