The Finn reached the final of the ATP 250 hard-court event in 2011 and made a good start against his Spanish opponent on Monday.

After surviving a break point in the opening game, Nieminen squandered two chances to steal a march at 4-3 up.

However, the world number 57 made no mistake when another chance came his way two games later, closing out the set on his opponent's serve.

Nieminen went an early break down in the second and saw four chances to get back on terms come and go in the next game.

But the 33-year-old proved a constant threat on Ramos-Vinolas' serve for the remainder and eventually outnumbered his opponent by two breaks to one.

Bernard Tomic will meet third seed Kevin Anderson in the second round after the Australian defeated wildcard Patrik Rosenholm 7-6 (7-1) 5-7 6-4.

Tomic proved unbeatable on his serve throughout the opening set and remained blemishless in the tie-break.

Rosenholm recovered well to edge the second, but Tomic sealed his progression with his third match point.

In the day's remaining match, Teymuraz Gabashvili sailed into the second round with a 6-2 6-4 triumph over Alejandro Falla.

Gabashvili now faces the daunting prospect of a meeting with defending champion and second seed Grigor Dimitrov.
