Nieminen falls to Gremelmayr

Denis Gremelmayr won two tie-breakers to defeat Jarkko Nieminen in three sets at the Unicef Open on Wednesday.

German Gremelmayr, unseeded for the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, sits 60 places below the Finn at world number 110.

But Gremelmayr belied the difference in rank, grinding out a 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 7-6 (7-5) victory in two hours and twenty minutes to end Nieminen's participation in the second round.

Next comes a quarter-final against Cypriot second seed Marcos Baghdatis, who defeated Dutchman Robin Haase 7-5 6-4.

Belgian Xavier Malisse, seeded third, also accounted for a Dutch representative, beating wildcard Jesse Huta Galung 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

World number 41 Malisse will now meet Alex Bogomolov Jr of the United States, after he accounted for Italian Filippo Volandri 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.

Dimitry Tursunov needed three sets to overcome Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, eventually winning 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-3.

Russian Tursunov will now play Colombian Santiago Giraldo, who saw off German Michael Berrer 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.
