The world number three has been struggling with appendicitis in recent weeks, although he has elected not to have surgery for the time being.

Nadal reached the final of the ATP 1000 event in 2007 before being beaten by David Nalbandian, but the Spaniard will take not part in this year's tournament.

Nadal's withdrawal also casts doubt over his participation at next month's ATP World Finals at the O2 Arena in London.

The 28-year-old faces Borna Coric in the last eight of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday and had planned to decide after that tournament whether to undergo surgery or conclude his campaign at the Tour Finals.
