Rafael Nadal reached the final of the ATP World Tour Finals, ending Andy Murray's season in the process.

The Spaniard and world number one had to dig deep against his Scottish opponent in the first semi-final at London's O2 Arena, eventually winning 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (8-6).

In a high-quality, see-sawing encounter, Murray opened up a 3-0 lead in the final set courtesy of an ace and two forehand winners.

But Nadal refused to let Murray out of his grasp, battling back to 5-5 and even having a chance to win the game but failing to convert.

He inevitably did take the match with a forehand stroke ending an 81-minute final set, with the match travelling three hours and 11 minutes in total.

Despite hitting 22 aces to five, Murray was left contemplating a losing end to his year. But he garnered much praise from opponent Nadal.

"Today I played one of the finest matches of my career," Nadal said after the game.

"I want to congratulate Andy for his attitude. He is having a great career. He's going to win a lot of Grand Slams in my opinion."

Nadal will now play the winner of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.
