The British eighth seed, who battled cramp in the opening round, had no such issues under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights as he beat German Bachinger 6-3 6-3 6-4.

Bachinger upset Czech veteran Radek Stepanek to reach the second round, but the qualifier was no match for Murray.

Searching for his second US Open crown, Murray hit 36 winners and 17 unforced errors in a strong display.

Murray got through the 106-minute encounter without dropping serve, breaking Bachinger four times.

The draw has slightly opened up for Murray, who will face Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in the third round.

Kuznetsov upset Spanish 31st seed Fernando Verdasco, a player Murray has nonetheless dominated throughout his career.

Neither Murray nor Bachinger looked like breaking serve in the first set, but the two-time grand slam champion did just that in the eighth game.

Murray carried that momentum into the second set and broke in the opening game, and again to wrap it up 6-3.

Bachinger fought hard but never troubled Murray, who will have been glad to get through in straight sets.
