Murray, seeded eighth, saw off the threat of in-form French ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 7-5 6-4 in two hours 35 minutes at Flushing Meadows.

The Briton has been criticised for being below-par since his major wins in the US in '12 and Wimbledon in 2013.

But Murray was at his consistent best against Tsonga, producing a measly 18 unforced errors while clocking 45 winners in a dominant display.

Tsonga's winners-to-errors ratio, meanwhile, was well in the negative, with just 32 clean winners and 45 unforced errors.

Murray even out-aced more heralded server Tsonga 11-6, as he moved into the last eight.

The Scotsman set up a salivating quarter-final with top seed Djokovic, who dispatched of German 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1 7-5 6-4.

Djokovic saved a set point in the second set with a passing winner, and he advanced in two hours three minutes.

The Serb remains on track for a fifth-consecutive final appearance in New York.

Third-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka fended off the challenge of Spanish 16th seed Tommy Robredo 7-5 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.

Wawrinka crucially saved two set points in the third set tie-break, before advancing in four sets in a feisty encounter.

In the night match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Japanese 10th seed Kei Nishikori outlasted Canadian fifth seed Milos Raonic 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (6-8) 7-5 6-4 after an error-strewn display from the big-serving Canadian.

The match lasted four hours 19 minutes, and finished at 02:26am local time - tying the record of the latest finish at the major with matches between Kohlschreiber and John Isner (2012), and Mats Wilander and Mikael Pernfors (1993).
