Murray dispatches Tsonga to set up Djokovic clash

The Brit produced by far his best performance of the tournament to earn a straight sets win at Flushing Meadows, emerging victorious 7-5 7-5 6-4.

Due to the hot, energy-sapping conditions at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the last-16 contest always promised to be something of a test of endurance.

And it was Murray who coped better with the New York climate, wearing down an opponent that had beaten him just last month on his way to Rogers Cup glory in Toronto.

Eighth seed Murray racked up 45 winners on his way to a victory that sets up an enticing quarter-final with top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic, who he overcame in an enthralling 2012 US Open final to win his maiden grand-slam title.

Murray was understandably delighted to progress to the last eight and is hopeful he can earn what would be considered a surprise victory against reigning Wimbledon champion and world number one Djokovic.

"It was extremely tough conditions, very humid," Murray said in his on-court interview.

"The first two sets were very long, mentally quite draining, glad I managed to get through."

On the Djokovic clash he added: "[It will be a] tough match. We've had a lot of long ones, I hope we can play another top-level match, if I play well I have a chance."
