Murray confident of recovering ranking

The Scot, who was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov at the quarter-final stage at Wimbledon earlier this year, currently sits ninth having slipped as low as 10th last month.

But former world number two Murray is keen to address the situation as soon as possible and believes his absence through a back injury towards the end of last season could work to his favour as he bids to climb back into the top four.

"The lower you drop in the rankings, naturally the harder the draws become but hopefully I can pick some points up over the next few weeks and months," he told Sky Sports.

"Obviously I didn't play the last three months of last year, so after the US Open I have no points to defend through to the end of the year and hopefully then the ranking will start to move up again.

"But outside of the slams really it's been a tough year for me, I haven't played so well.

"In the slams, I've had a few disappointing matches. But I've played some good tennis the last few months and I just need to get the consistency now."

Murray announced on Monday that he intended to continue working with coach Amelie Mauresmo for the long term, despite the disappointment of failing to defend his Wimbledon title.
