The 2013 Wimbledon champion - an ever-present in the top five from September 2008 to January this year - had slipped down the rankings in recent months.

However, Murray has recaptured something like his best form and secured a third title in five outings with an epic three-set victory over Tommy Robredo in Sunday's Valencia Open final.

The Scot is now up from 10th to eighth in the world rankings and firmly on course to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals next month.

He sits fifth in the Race to London and can guarantee a finals berth by reaching the last eight of the Paris Masters this week.

Tomas Berdych is the other climber in the top 10, the Czech moving ahead of David Ferrer into fifth.

The top four remain unchanged, with Novak Djokovic holding onto the number one spot for a 16th successive week.

Serena Williams' victory at the WTA Finals in Singapore strengthened her place at the top of the women's rankings, while Maria Sharapova holds onto the number two spot.

Simona Halep, beaten 6-3 6-0 by Williams, climbs back into the top three after her final appearance, and Ana Ivanovic is up two places to fifth.
