Niculescu sets up Williams re-match in Miami

Monica Niculescu - Cropped

Monica Niculescu will face Serena Williams for a second tournament running, after advancing past the Miami Open first round on Tuesday.

After encountering Williams on her return from a 14-year hiatus from the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Niculescu will again front up against the world number one - after downing Shelby Rogers 7-6 (7-1) 6-1.

Ranked 70th, Niculescu will hope to improve on her 7-5 7-5 loss to Williams in California - in what was their first career clash despite the pair competing on the WTA Tour for almost 13 years.

Williams is the two-time defending champion in Miami, and has won the WTA Premier event seven times.

Madison Brengle booked a second-round date with fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki, after the American thrashed Aleksandra Krunic 6-0 6-2.

Champion in 2012, fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska will face Anna Schmiedlova in the second round - after the Slovakian beat Polona Hercog 6-3 6-2.

Catherine Bellis won her first tour-level match she played since her headline-making US Open campaign in August, beating fellow wildcard Indy de Vroome 6-2 6-2.

Bellis, 15, upset 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova at Flushing Meadows, in her first match on the WTA Tour, and returned to the senior ranks with a straightforward victory over Dutchwoman De Vroome.

By coincidence, Bellis will face 29th seed Zarina Diyas next - the opponent she lost to in the second round in New York, but the teenager will be buoyed by the 6-0 set she won in defeat.

Bojana Jovanovski and Tereza Smitkova both had comeback wins in their first-up matches in Florida.

Jovanovski came back to beat Mona Barthel 3-6 6-3 6-2, while Smitkova won just 10 points in the first set before seeing off wildcard Natalia Vikhlyantseva 0-6 7-5 6-2.

World number 419 Paula Badosa Gibert made the most of her wildcard, thrashing Petra Cetkovska 6-1 6-1 - the Czech ranked 330 spots higher than the victorious Spaniard.

Kaia Kanepi was too good for wildcard Francoise Abanda 6-2 6-3, Kristina Mladenovic downed Klara Koukalova 6-4 6-4 and Karin Knapp cruised past Katerina Siniakova 6-2 6-0.

Kurumi Nara advanced past Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 6-3, while Johanna Larsson edged out Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
