The Czech broke the fifth seed twice in the opening set on Monday and, despite going a break down at 3-2 in the second, recovered to reel off the next four games and progress to the second round of the WTA International clay court event.

Pliskova will now take on Alison Van Uytvanck, who saw off Antonia Lottner 6-1 6-2.

Second seed Eugenie Bouchard cruised into the second round, overcoming Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0 6-3.

The Canadian stormed to the first set in just 25 minutes and, although her Czech opponent put up more of a fight in the second, victory was never in doubt for Bouchard, who will now take on Australian qualifier Arina Rodionova after she edged past Tereza Martincova 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Other seeds to progress were Elina Svitolina and Annika Beck, who both enjoyed comfortable straight-sets victories.

Ukrainian Svitolina, seeded fourth in the tournament, saw off Iveta Melzer 7-5 6-4, while eight seed Beck overcame Jana Cepelova 6-2 6-3.

Svitolina will go up against Beatriz Garcia Vidagany in the second round after the Spaniard saw off fellow-qualifier Nina Zander 6-2 6-3.

Caroline Garcia had to battle hard against Julia Glushko, the French seventh seed eventually coming through 6-4 5-7 7-5, to book a place with Dinah Pfizenmaier in the second round after the German got the better of Montserrat Gonzalez 6-2 6-4.

Elsewhere, Karin Knapp beat Shahar Peer 6-3 6-2 and Yaroslava Shvedova saw off Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 7-5 6-3.
