McEnroe says he could beat Serena

The original tennis brat John McEnroe reckons he could still beat women’s champ Serena Williams.

Now a pundit and commentator, McEnroe made the huge claim on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show this week.

Williams is gunning for a calendar Grand Slam at the US Open in New York next month, while 56-year-old McEnroe won seven majors in the 1970s and ‘80s.

“I believe I could take her,” McEnroe said boldly when asked what would happen if the two were to play a serious match.

“15 years ago Donald Trump made an offer which I felt was not enough.

“Serena has a lot to lose by losing to an old fart like myself and I’ve got a lot to lose, because if I lose to, God forbid, a woman, I’m not allowed in any men’s locker room for the next 15-years or maybe the end of my life.”

It’s not the first time Williams has been challenged by a man, with German pro Karsten Braasch beating both Serena and sister Venus in one day.

“My training regime consisted of a leisurely round of golf in the morning followed by a couple of shandies,” Braasch said of the match.

Then the world No. 203, Braasch beat Serena 6-1 and Venus 6-2.

Back in the ‘70s, male tennis player Bobby Riggs took on Margaret Court, winning 6-2 6-1 before losing 6-4 6-3 6-3 to Bille Jean King.

Jimmy Connors took on Martina Navratilova in 1992, winning 7-5 6-2.
