Number one seed Maria Sharapova won her first ever match at the Mexican Open on Monday, defeating American Shelby Rogers 6-4 6-1 to advance to the second round.

Sharapova, who arrived in Acapulco to much fanfare amid her maiden campaign at the WTA International event, recovered from an early deficit to close out the match in an hour, 14 minutes.

Rogers was on the verge of a 3-0 lead after breaking the Russian in the opening game but Sharapova held serve and broke back to level the set at 3-3.

That was the turning point for the Australian Open finalist, who won three of the next four games to take the first set before sealing the match in a canter.

"I've been in many different situations in my career, and when you're down, you have to change a few things and stay positive," Sharapova said.

"You just have to concentrate on one point at a time instead of the bigger result, and as the match went on I definitely felt more and more comfortable out there.

"I felt really good and really happy to perform here in front of all the fans for the first time."

There was no such luck for fellow seed Madison Brengle, who was eliminated by Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 2-6 7-5 7-5.

Brengle - the eighth-seeded American - appeared on track for a routine win after breezing through the opening set.

But Torro-Flor rallied from 5-3 down in both the second and third sets to stun the 2015 Hobart International runner-up.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Monica Puig also won through to the second round.

Croatian Lucic-Baroni accounted for Lara Arruabarrena 6-3 6-3.

Mattek-Sands of the United States made light work of local Marcela Zacarias, winning 6-2 6-1.

Puerto Rican Puig overcame Tereza Smitkova 6-4 3-6 6-3.
