Lorenzi among seeds to advance in Quito

Italian fifth seed Paolo Lorenzi saved a match point as he won through to the second round of the Ecuador Open with a three-set win against Adrian Menendez-Maceiras on Tuesday.

Lorenzi came from behind to see off the Spaniard 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-1) after two hours and 19 minutes on the clay courts in Quito.

Menendez-Maceiras had a chance to close out the match in the 12th game of the third set but Lorenzo, who reached the second round at the Australian Open after stunning Alexandr Dolgopolov, dug himself out of a hole before prevailing in the tie-break.

Awaiting Lorenzi in the second round is Colombian Alejandro Falla, who rallied to beat Joao Souza 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 6-4 earlier on Tuesday.

Sixth seeded Brazilian Bellucci was also triumphant on Cancha Central via a 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 victory over wildcard Giovanni Lapentti.

Lapentti forced a third and deciding stanza after winning the second-set tie-break but he was no match for Bellucci, who saved six of seven break points and clocked up 14 aces.

Next up for Bellucci is Horacio Zeballos.

Dusan Lajovic - the Serbian seventh seed - earned a second-round meeting with qualifier Nicolas Jarry courtesy of a 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 win against Luca Vanni.

Jarry served 19 aces as he upstaged wildcard Gonzalo Escobar 2-6 6-4 6-3.

Victor Estrella Burgos was the other seed to win on Tuesday.

The Dominican eighth seed accounted for qualifier Andre Ghem 6-4 6-4 and will now play qualifier Renzo Olivo in the next round.

Olivo trumped Evgeny Donskoy 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-1.

Elsewhere, qualifier Gerald Melzer prevailed 1-6 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (8-6) against Andreas Haider-Maurer.

Alejandro Gonzalez eased past Facundo Bagnis 6-2 6-4, while Daniel Gimeno-Traver dispatched wildcard Marton Fucsovics 3-6 6-4 6-4.
