Former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt will make his 15th and last appearance at Flushing Meadows this year after receiving a wildcard to the grand slam.

The 34-year-old two-time grand slam winner has announced his intention to retire after the 2016 Australian Open.

Ranked 162nd in the world, Hewitt won the US Open in 2001 – while he last reached the quarter-finals in 2006.

He was one of eight players awarded wildcards on Tuesday for the tournament, which starts on August 31.

Americans Jared Donaldson, Bjorn Fratangelo, Ryan Harrison, Austin Krajicek, Ryan Shane and Frances Tiafoe and Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert join him in the main draw.

In the women's draw, Australian and French Open doubles champion Bethanie Mattek-Sands headlines the wildcards awarded.

The 30-year-old American was joined by countrywomen Louisa Chirico, Samantha Crawford, Nicole Gibbs, Sofia Kenin, Jamie Loeb and Sachia Vickery and Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin.
