The Wimbledon champion has struggled on her return to the hard courts, with a surprising defeat to Elina Svitolina at the Western and Southern Open on Wednesday coming on the back of a last-16 loss to Ekaterina Makarova at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

However, Kvitova can take heart from her record in Connecticut, where she has been a finalist in each of the past two seasons.

Kvitova was unable to defend her title last year, as Simona Halep continued her charge up the WTA rankings with a straight-sets win.

However, the Czech is understandably confident as she readies herself for the year's final grand slam, which follows next week's event.

"New Haven is very close and very friendly, I love to play there," said Kvitova. "I hope I can continue with good results. It will be a tough tournament.

"I'm looking forward to playing there as preparation for the U.S. Open.

"When I am in the United States I try to play as much as I can before the U.S. Open. New York has the hard court, so New Haven is a great opportunity for me to get some great practice in just a week before."

The world number four could come up against her 2013 conqueror Halep, after the Romanian was confirmed as an entrant for the event.

Rising star Eugenie Bouchard, another to suffer early exits in her last two tournaments, will also feature, while Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki is looking for a fifth New Haven title having dominated the event from 2008 to 2011 with four successive wins.

Halep is wary of both Kvitova and Wozniacki, but travels to Connecticut hoping to retain one of the six titles she won last year.

"It will be great to be again in New Haven," said the world number two. "The tournament was very nice for me, I played well [in 2013], I beat good players there, Wozniacki and Kvitova.

"I feel good. It's nice there.

"But it's not easy and it will be my second tournament on hard court. I will do everything to win again."

Organisers confirmed on Thursday that Dominika Cibulkova, Andrea Petkovic, Kirsten Flipkens and Sam Stosur have been handed wildcards for the tournament.
