Kvitova humbled by qualifier Krunic

Having seen Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber crash out on Friday, the Wimbledon champion followed suit a day later courtesy of a 6-4 6-4 reversal against an opponent ranked 141 places beneath her in the world.

Krunic, 21, had already ensured her best appearance at a grand slam prior to her third-round meeting with the world number four.

Third seed Kvitova, who won the Connecticut Open for a second time earlier this month, had beaten Kristina Mladenovic and Petra Cetkovska to reach the fourth round

However, Krunic gave herself an ideal platform to build on as the Serbian won 13 of 16 first-service points while Kvitova could only convert one of three break-point opportunities.

Having fallen behind in the match, the Czech responded strongly in the second set as she broke early on to help ensure a 2-0 lead.

Krunic roared back - winning the next four games - as she broke Kvitova four times in total during the set.

Kvitova did not help herself, double-faulting four times in the final set, but Krunic impressed in victory and will now focus on her first fourth-round tie at a major.

"First of all thank you everyone for a great support," Krunic told the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd after her victory.

"It was an honour for me to be in the same court with Petra. Of course I didn't expect to win.

"I was hoping at least to win a set but I managed to win a match somehow."
