Kumkhum disappoints in Ningbo

Kumkhum headed to the WTA 125 event off the back of a run to the Japan Women's Open semi-finals earlier this month.

That impressive showing helped Kumkhum reach a career-high ranking of 85th, but she was overturned 6-2 6-2 by world number 136 Duan in an hour and 18 minutes on court.

Six double-faults typified the Thai's struggles and she was broken on five occasions in a poor display.

Other top talents to fall in Tuesday's play were fourth seed Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Russian fifth seed Vitalia Diatchenko and seventh-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer.

Mayr-Achleitner looked well off the pace as he succumbed to a 6-3 6-4 defeat at the hands of teenage qualifier Wang Yan, almost 400 places below the Austrian in the world rankings.

The latter pair were eliminated in three-set slogs, Diatchenko going down 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-3) to Chinese wildcard Yang Zhaoxuan, and Peer losing 6-4 3-6 6-3 to Poland's Magda Linette.

Third seed Alla Kudryavtseva overcame wildcard Han Xinyun 3-6 7-5 6-1, while Chinese seeds Wang Qiang and Zheng Saisai kept hopes of a home win alive by making the second round - Wang going through after Ksenia Pervak retired early in their clash and Zheng cruising past Australia's Arina Rodionova in straight sets.

Xu Yi-fan, Zhu Lin and Elizaveta Kulichkova were the other winners on the second day of main-draw action.
