The 2012 champion was on court for little over 70 minutes in a 6-3 6-1 victory at the WTA International hard-court event in Azerbaijan.

Jovanovski is ranked 80 spots above her Polish opponent and the Serbian underlined the gulf in class by winning 76 per cent of first-serve points and breaking on six occasions.

The fifth seed will now face Misa Eguchi for a place in the last four after the Japanese ruthlessly saw off Urszula Radwanska.

Qualifier Eguchi overcame a 66-place gap between the two in the rankings to register a one-sided 6-2 6-1 triumph.

Radwanska struggled on her own serve throughout and was unable to fend off any of the six break-point opportunities that Eguchi created.

Jana Cepelova was a surprise casualty, the eighth seed falling to a 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 defeat at the hands of Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier.

There were 11 breaks of serve in a frenetic encounter, but it was the world number 95 who ultimately prevailed.

Shahar Peer was runner-up to Elina Svitolina 12 months ago and the Israeli remains in contention to go one better after a come-from-behind 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory over Vesna Dolonc.
