Poland's Janowicz, seeded seventh for the ATP 250 tournament in Metz, had looked in big trouble against the world number 76 but he found his feet to eventually progress 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Janowicz struggled on his own serve in the first set, only winning 52 per cent of the points, but he responded in the second before finally breaking Mannarino in the third.

The Frenchman saved five break points in the match but when Janowicz converted the sixth he took the advantage and secured victory with his first match point.

Tobias Kamke recovered from a slow start against French qualifier Kenny De Schepper before he rallied to progress in straight sets at the hard-court event.

Having lost three consecutive games at the start of the first set the German needed a response and he produced one, winning five in a row.

He wrapped up his 6-3 7-6 (7-5) win with a solid second-set display.

Paolo Lorenzi had no such problems against French wildcard Laurent Lokoli as he raced to a 6-2 6-4 win in just 76 minutes.

Three breaks of serve and winning 74 per cent of points on his own serve helped the Italian book a second-round clash with third seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny had to withstand a barrage of aces from France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert to seal his place in the next round.

Herbert served 16 in their match but it was Przysiezny who set up a clash with Gael Monfils with a 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-4) win.

Meanwhile, Igor Sijsling was on his way to a comprehensive victory over Andreas Seppi when the Italian retired through injury, with the score 6-0 4-1 in favour of the Dutchman.
