In-form Halep eyes Bucharest success

SimonaHalep

Halep has risen to a career-high ranking of third in the world after bowing out of Wimbledon at the semi-final stage to Canada's Eugenie Bouchard.

The French Open finalist has made it to at least the last-eight stage of each slam this year while also winning her seventh WTA career title with victory over Angelique Kerber in Doha in February.

After her best showing at the All England Club, which could have been extended further had she not twisted an ankle against Bouchard, Halep returns to her homeland for the first Bucharest Open, which begins on Monday.

Having missed out on a second consecutive grand slam final, Halep is eager to bounce back at the WTA International clay-court tournament in the Romanian capital.

"I try to enjoy the moment. I [am] coming back home to see my fans and be at the tournament in Bucharest, our first WTA [event], so I am positive, full of joy and I hope to have a good tournament there," she told Digi Sport.

"It will be hard to settle in, when you come from the clay to the grass it is easier than when you come from the grass onto clay - the ball on clay is very slow.

"There will be difficult days in Bucharest, but I will give everything I can to get to the final. It will be hard, but that's I want."

Halep gets her campaign under way against France's Kristina Mladenovic and will undoubtedly be the favourite to pick up her second WTA title of the year, with none of her rivals occupying spots in the top 10.

Experienced Italian Roberta Vinci will hope to better her season's best effort at the Portugal Open, where she lost out to Elena Vesnina.

Czech world number 32 Klara Koukalova is seeded third and starts with a test against Romanian Monica Niculescu while Italy's Karin Knapp is a spot further back.

Knapp opens against world number 62 Petra Cetkovska, having been beaten by the Czech in both their previous meetings.

The remainder of the seeds are all ranked outside the world's top 50 with the home crowd's hopes of a Romanian success, aside from Halep, likely to rest on Niculescu, Camelia-Irina Begu and Alexandra Cadantu.
