Ifs? Buts? Stop the excuses Tomic

MORE: Kokk rises to the occasion

It only took one quote from conqueror Thanasi Kokkinakis to ram home the main reason why Bernie isn't reaching his potential.

"I felt like I was in better physical shape than he is," Kokkinakis said

"I kept hanging in there. I trusted my fitness and it paid off."

How damning is that?

A 19-year-old youngster, bloodied and bruised, felt he was physically stronger than Tomic - the more-experienced and arguably more talented player.

But instead of acknowledging that he was beaten by someone with more desire and workrate, Tomic offered more excuses.

“I had two match points serving for it, I kind of screwed it up in the end,” Tomic said.

“Looking back as well to Munich and Miami, I had a bunch of match points this year.

"If I had all converted, I would have been close to top 20."

Well Bernie, you didn't take your chances and you aren't in the top 20.

Time to take a leaf out of Kokkinakis' book.

Desire, fitness and work rate are essential components in acheiving tennis success.
