Martina Hingis suffered defeat in her first singles match for eight years, losing in straight sets to Agnieszka Radwanska in the Fed Cup tie between Switzerland and Poland.

Hingis was named in Switzerland's Fed Cup squad for the World Group play-off earlier this month as she bids to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

But the former world number one and five-time grand slam champion - who last took part in the competition in 1998 as Switzerland lost the final to Spain - could not mark her comeback with a victory on Saturday.

The 34-year-old lost a first set that featured five breaks of serve before the world number nine's quality told in the second, Radwanska racing to a 6-4 6-0 triumph to put Poland 1-0 up.

Hingis will face Radwanska's sister Urszula on Sunday before taking part in the doubles rubber alongside Timea Bacsinszky against Alicja Rosolska and Klaudia Jans-Ignacik.
