Hewitt unsure about future after first-round exit

Lleyton Hewitt

The Australian veteran was well-beaten by Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych, who claimed a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win at Flushing Meadows.

At 33 and struggling to compete at grand slams, Hewitt has been tipped to retire after most exits at majors.

The US Open loss marked his third first-round loss at grand slams this year, having won one match at Wimbledon.

Asked if he would be in New York for the tournament next year, Hewitt said: "Don't know. Get that asked every week."

Hewitt will be part of the Australia Davis Cup team for their tie against Uzbekistan on grass in Perth in mid-September.

Beyond that, he plans to play hard-court tournaments in Asia in September and October.

"At this stage I will be playing the Asian swing and I'll take it from there," Hewitt said.

Hewitt said Berdych, who hit 43 winners and 51 unforced errors, "was just too good" for him on Wednesday.

"It was always going to be a tough match," he said.

"I felt like during the week I was hitting the ball reasonably well. I was pretty happy how I was moving out on the court.

"I had some good practices with quality players. I was ready for the match today, but, you know, in the end he was just too good."
