Hantuchova targets defence in grass-court opener

DanielaHantuchova

Hantuchova won the year's first grass-court competition in 2013 with victory over Donna Vekic but will feature alongside the likes of top seed Ana Ivanovic, Sam Stosur and Sloane Stephens in her bid to repeat the achievement.

That has not been done since Maria Sharapova's successive victories in 2004 and 2005 although withdrawals from Eugenie Bouchard and Jelena Jankovic could boost her chances.

There are three competitors in the world's top 20 but the focus for all those competing will be on the third slam of the season, which gets under way later this month.

Former world number one Ivanovic bowed out of the French Open at the third round but will hope to deal with the pressure of being seeded first for the Classic.

The world number 12 has two WTA singles titles to her name this year but will face competition from seasoned pros such as Kirsten Flipkens and Lucie Safarova.

The pair complete the top five seeds, with Ivanovic looking forward to a return to grass, which will come against Mona Barthel or Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round.

"Returning to Birmingham for the Aegon Classic is very exciting for me," she said.

"The tournament has a very intimate setting giving the perfect introduction to the grass court season. I'm looking forward getting out on the grass back in Birmingham this June."

There will be three all-seeded ties in the second round with Hantuchova opening against Flipkens, Stephens taking on Klara Koukalova and Magdalena Rybarikova meeting Safarova.

Looking to spring a surprise outside of the seeded entrants will be the three British wildcards also in the draw - Johanna Konta, Heather Watson and Naomi Broady.

Second, third and fourth in the British rankings respectively, the trio will hope to make the most of home backing - specifically Watson who has surged back into the top 100 after suffering with illness in 2013.

"Birmingham will be my first tournament on the grass this year and I'm so excited to be playing in front of the home crowd," said the 22-year-old.

"I absolutely love this time of year. There's such a buzz about our sport and to have the home fans supporting you along the way is amazing.

"I'm feeling fit and healthy, and hopefully I'll give everyone something to cheer about."

Konta, currently enjoying a career-best ranking of 102, added: "It makes such a massive difference to have the crowd cheering you on and I'm really looking forward to my first match in Birmingham.

"It is the perfect preparation for Wimbledon."
