American Johnson, though, hit 13 aces on his way to a 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-2) triumph over Germany's Haas, advancing to the quarter-finals of an ATP level event for the second time in as many months.

Johnson also made the last eight in Auckland in January as a qualifier, and will face sixth seed Feliciano Lopez in the quarters at Delray Beach.

Spain's Lopez fought back from a deficit to beat France's Adrian Mannarino 4-6 6-4 6-2, to reach the last eight at the hard-court, ATP 250 tournament.

In an all-Australian battle, Marinko Matosevic progressed to the quarter-finals after eighth seed Lleyton Hewitt retired due to a shoulder injury.

Hewitt dropped the first set to Matosevic 7-6 (7-2), and after a brief discussion with the trainer at the change of ends, the veteran shook hands with his compatriot.

After the match, Hewitt cited a shoulder issue and said he simply could not serve as a result of the issue.

In an injury-marred day, last week's US National Indoor Championships finalist Ivo Karlovic played just one game of his second-round encounter with fourth seed Kevin Anderson before pulling out.

Anderson was leading 1-0 but, just four minutes in, Karlovic decided he could not continue.

Matosevic and Anderson will go head-to-head for a spot in the semi-finals.

Earlier, seventh seed Marin Cilic continued his sterling form in the day's only first-round clash, as he steamrolled Germany's Benjamin Becker 6-1 6-3.

The Croat will next meet American wildcard Ryan Harrison.
