The Belgian was in imperious form to see of Tobias Kamke 6-1 6-3 in their second-round clash at the ATP 250 hard-court event in Metz.

The eighth seed lost just four points on his first serve and fired down six aces on his way to victory in little over an hour.

Goffin, who claimed his first ATP title in Kitzbuhel in July, now faces a much sterner test in the quarter-finals against two-time champion Tsonga, who still harbours hopes of reaching the season-ending ATP World Tour finals.

Monfils, seeded second, has an excellent record in Metz, winning the title in 2009 and finishing runner-up in 2005.

The Frenchman delighted the home crowd by extending his record to 14-3 at the tournament by comfortably seeing off the challenge of qualifier Michal Przysiezny 7-5 6-1.

Monfils next meets Jerzy Janowicz following his 6-4 6-4 triumph over Jarkko Nieminen.

Third-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber is noted for his big serving and he lived up to that billing with 12 aces on his way to a 6-3 7-5 success against Paolo Lorenzi.

Kohlschreiber continues his quest for a sixth Tour title against compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff following his come-from-behind victory over fifth seed Jeremy Chardy 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4.

Rounding off the action, Joao Sousa, seeded sixth, was taken the distance in a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-3) win against Igor Sijsling.
